Variable - A definition

A formal definition of a variable from the fields of mathematics would probably be something like

"A quantity capable of assuming any value." or

"A symbol representing such a quantity".

I hope you are still reading... Getting to the point, in the Bazooka Adware and Spyware Encyclopedia variables are used in the uninstall instructions of the threats, to describe a location of a file or folder that should be deleted. Examples of variables are %WinDir% and %SystemDir%. The location of the file or folder that should be deleted may vary depending on which operating system you are running, but also other factors. Variables are therefore used since it impossible to list all locations of the specified file or folder.

Example 1: This is an example how the %SystemDir% variable is used in the uninstall instructions.

  1. Start Windows Explorer and delete:
    %SystemDir%\afolder\spywarefile.exe
Note: %SystemDir% is a variable (?). By default, this is C:\Windows\System (Windows 95/98/Me), C:\WINNT\System32 (Windows NT/2000), or C:\Windows\System32 (Windows XP).

This means that you should delete the file 'spywarefile.exe', most likely located in
'C:\Windows\System\afolder\', if you are running Windows 95/98/ME
'C:\WINNT\System32\afolder\', if you are running Windows NT/2000
'C:\Windows\System32\afolder\', if you are running Windows XP

    Note: %WinDir% is a variable (?). By default, this is C:\Windows (Windows 95/98/Me/XP) or C:\WINNT (Windows NT/2000).

'C:\Windows\', if you are running Windows 95/98/ME/XP
'C:\WINNT\', if you are running Windows NT/2000

  1. Start Windows Explorer and delete:
    "%ProgramsDir%\NastySpyware\hijackbrowser.exe
Note: %ProgramsDir% is a variable (?). By default, this is C:\Program Files.
