Overview

From the developer: "Keyboard Spectator is a multifunctional keyboard tracking software (a.k.a. keylogger) that is widely used by both regular users and IT security specialists. The reason for such popularity is that this program does not just record keystrokes; it is capable of recording language specific characters (ex. umlauts), date and time certain window was initiated as well as the caption of that window. Thus, this software combines two very important qualities - it records all typed data, so that you won't lose it when your computer unexpectedly crashes, and it keeps the record of all keyboard activity. The latter quality allows you to monitor your children's activity at home or to make sure your employees do not use company's computers inappropriately without invading their privacy." Source

The information on this page refers to Keyboard Spectator Pro 3.0. The keylogger installs by default in "%ProgramsDir%\Keyboard Spectator Pro\" and stores the logs in the same directory.

Note: %ProgramsDir% is a variable (?). By default, this is C:\Program Files.

During the testing I discovered that KeySpec alters the Task Manager's functionality. Either the Task Manager crashed or it did only show four! processes running, on a Windows 2000 Pro machine with 30 processes. Closing the keylogger restored Task Manager's functionality.

KeySpec connected to the internet, though it had not been configured to send the logs with email.

Manual removal

Please follow the instructions below if you would like to remove KeySpec manually. Please notice that you must follow the instructions very carefully and delete everything that is mentioned. In most cases the removal will fail if one single item is not deleted. If KeySpec remains on your system after stepping through the removal instructions, please double-check by stepping through them again.

1. Start the registry editor. This is done by clicking Start then Run. (The Run dialog will appear.) Type regedit and click OK. (The registry editor will open.)
2. Browse to the key:
   'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run'
3. In the right pane, delete the value called 'systems.exe', if it exists.
4. Exit the registry editor.
5. Restart your computer.
6. Delete the following directory and its content:
   "%ProgramsDir%\Keyboard Spectator Pro\"
   Note: %ProgramsDir% is a variable (?). By default, this is C:\Program Files.
