Overview

ZServ, also called APP:Adware-OpenSite, Transponder/ZServ, TROJ_AGENT.FL and ADW_ABET.ACC, is an Internet Explorer browser helper object that open pop-up windows.

Information from the vendor's web site (ZServ.biz): "Zserv is a software development company. We have developed a series of ad targeting applications such as Zserv.dll that help advertisers deliver targeted ads. In addition to our software development, we also provide certain support services to the distributors of our software."

When I contacted the vendor using their online form, I got a response from MyPCTuneUp: "Thank you for contacting MyPCTuneUp Support! This is an automatic acknowledgement to let you know that we have received your inquiry. There is no need to reply to this email. Your ticket code is ***. Please use this code in any further communication. Most emails receive a response within two to four business days. Thank you, MyPCTuneUp Support http://www.mypctuneup.com" MyPCTuneUp.com states that they offer a "uninstall program to remove the following Advertising Software programs from your computer: BestOffers, BetterInternet, Ceres, LocalNRD, MSView, MultiMPP, MXTarget, OfferOptimizer, Twaintec, and some others."

www.stop-popup-ads-now.com is listed inside the zserv.dll file, registered by Thinking Media LP. ZServ.biz and mypctuneup.com is also registered by Thinking Media LP.

Uninstall ZServ with FreeFixer

The tool is called FreeFixer and can help you remove unwanted Browser Helper Objects, Internet Explorer toolbars and software that starts automatically when you reboot your computer, so it can offer some assistance while uninstalling ZServ. The manual removal instructions listed below will help you to identify what to delete with FreeFixer.

Manual removal

Please follow the instructions below if you would like to remove ZServ manually. Please notice that you must follow the instructions very carefully and delete everything that is mentioned. In most cases the removal will fail if one single item is not deleted. If ZServ remains on your system after stepping through the removal instructions, please double-check by stepping through them again.

  1. Start your computer in safe mode.
  2. Start the registry editor. This is done by clicking Start then Run. (The Run dialog will appear.) Type regedit and click OK. (The registry editor will open.)
  3. Delete 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes \ CLSID \ {00000000-C1EC-0345-6EC2-4D0300000000}', if it exists.
  4. Delete 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Browser Helper Objects \ {00000000-C1EC-0345-6EC2-4D0300000000}', if it exists.
  5. Exit the registry editor.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Start Windows Explorer and delete:
    %WinDir%\ZServ.dll
    Note: %WinDir% is a variable (?). By default, this is C:\Windows (Windows 95/98/Me/XP) or C:\WINNT (Windows NT/2000).
  8. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  9. In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options.
  10. Click the Programs tab -> Reset Web Settings.
